Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3There was a time when many digital camera companies (including Canon and Olympus) offered a top-of-the-range digital compact with a fast f2.0 or f1.8 lens. But as such companies started to concentrate on high-powered zoom lenses instead, such cameras fell by the way side.

But Panasonic are bucking this trend by announcing the new Lumix DMC-LX3 with fast, low zoom ratio lens. To be more specific the new lens in a 24-60mm (35mm equiv.) f2.0-2.8 lens. The new camera is an update to the LX2 which offered a 28-112mm (35mm equiv.) f2.8-4.9 zoom lens, so Pansonic has gone from a 4x zoom lens to a 2.5x zoom lens with a bit more at the wide end, a lot less at the telephoto end, and about 1 stop faster.

The new camera looks very interesting, and it will be interesting to see whether other manufactures follow suit with similar fast lens compacts.
