Nikon D700
Nikon have officially announced the D700, a new compact professional DSLR with a full-frame sensor. The D700 is essentially a D3 in the D300 form factor. The principle visual difference between the D700 and the D300 is the much larger housing for the full-frame viewfinder. The specification, meanwhile, if virtually identical to the D3, with one or two minor differences, for example, the D700 needs the MB-D10 power pack to achieve it's fasted frame-rate of 8fps and there is no ultra-high speed mode using just the centre portion of the sensor.
Anyone hoping for an affordable semi-pro model will be disappointed. Nikon is selling the D700 as a compact full-professional model with build quality and pricing to match. There is no official UK pricing as yet, but an official European price of 2600 Euro suggests the D700 will be quite a bit more expensive than its only real competitor, the Canon EOS 5D. It will be interesting to see what Canon can come up with to replace the 5D and truly compete with the D700... the 12mp sensor of the D700 at least gives Canon a chance to beat the Nikon on resolution if nothing else.
dpreview.com have a detail preview of the D700. And Nikon have posted a 24page brochure for the D700 in PDF format.
Nikon have also announced a new flash gun: the Speedlight SB-900.
